How to Make Delicious Dishes with Apple Suji

Suji. Probably the love of every mother’s kitchen life.

Suji, or semolina, is made from wheat grain, specifically, durum wheat. It is used to make various recipes and is an all-time favourite for breakfast, lunch and dinner recipes. In this blog, we will explore the many, many recipes that you can make with Apple Suji, let us first understand how semolina is made.

How is suji made?

Suji is made from wheat grains. In the ancient times, it was made traditionally by crushing the wheat kernels between the stones and sieving it to get a grainy texture. Now, with the use of flour mills, the process has become much easier.

Make recipes with Apple Suji

1. Upma

A cult-favourite among all Indian households and the go-to breakfast, upma is as delicious as is easy to make, all the more so with Apple Suji. Here’s all that you need:

Ingredients:

1 cup Apple Suji
2 tablespoons oil
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1 teaspoon urad dal
1 onion, chopped
2 green chilies, chopped
Salt to taste
2 cups hot water
Chopped coriander leaves for garnish

1. Heat up the oil in a pan and add the mustard seeds, urad dal and let it roast for a minute.
2. Add onion and green chillies and sauté till onions are brownish. You can also add curry leaves (2-3) for an added taste.
3. Add Apple Suji and roast it till the mixture turns brown/ golden and aromatic.
4. Pour the hot water and keep stirring it continuously to avoid lumps.
5. Cook till it thickens a bit and then garnish with coriander.

Your Apple Suji Upma is ready. Serve hot!

2. Dhokla

Dhokla is love! Especially when it comes to Gujarat, the love and affection for dhokla is immense. And Suji Dhokla is an all-time, everyday snack. Here’s all that you need:

Ingredients:

1 cup Apple Suji
1/2 cup dahi
1/4 cup water
1 teaspoon ginger paste
2 green chilies, chopped
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
Salt to taste
1 teaspoon Eno/ fruit salt
1 tablespoon oil
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
2 tablespoons chopped coriander

For tadka:

1 tablespoon oil
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
A pinch of asafoetida (hing)

1. In a bowl, mix Apple Suji, dahi, water, ginger paste, green chillies, turmeric powder and salt. Mix well. Let it rest for 15-20 minutes.
2. Adjust the batter with water if it’s too thick. Add eno/ fruit salt in the batter.
3. Take a dhokla plate, and grease it with oil.
4. Pour out the batter onto the dhokla plate and put it in the steamer for 15-20 minutes.
5. Once done, insert a toothpick to check if the dhokla is cooked properly. If the toothpick is not clean, cook the dhokla for another 5 minutes.
6. Remove the dhoklas and let it cool for 10 minutes.
7. For the tadka, heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds and green chilies. Let it fry for a bit.
8. Pout out this tadka over the dhokla.

Delicious Apple Suji Dhokla is now ready. Serve fresh and hot with green chutney!

3. Halwa

There is a reason Suji Halwa is preferred by everyone! It is easy to cook and is delicious. Makes for the perfect “meetha” that we all crave. Here’s all that you need:

Ingredients:

1 cup Apple Suji
1/2 cup ghee
1 cup sugar (powdered)
3 cups water
4-5 cardamoms
Chopped nuts for garnish

1. Heat up ghee in a pan and roast Apple Suji on a low flame.
2. Roast till it turns brown or golden.
3. In another pan, boil water and add the sugar and cardamom to make a syrup.
4. Slowly add the syrup in the roasted Suji and stir continuously to avoid lumps.
5. Cook till the halwa thickens.
6. Add chopped nuts for garnish.
